I have been Auditing my 40K collection for 8th ed and after finding out how much its worth for Insurance as will as working out how many points it is just for kicks. (I am only adding basic equipment not loading on everything.).

Once I had those stats I did one more basic stat to work out the average cost per point.
It is obviously a very average/ approximate stat but is has been fun to see what they are coming out at....
I would say I am a fairly overall collector. I don't tend to specialise in any particular slots or styles of armies I collect a bit of everything and make sure I can run any type of list I would possibly run. To qualify lets just say they are all more than your average players 2000-3000 pts worth lol.... so it should be a fairly good average across all units and a good amount of each.

Tau 64c/pt
Orks: 63c/pt
Nids 61c/point
Eldar: 56c/pt
CSM: 39c/pt

Will put up more as i do them smile.gif

It is intersting to see the list that have had the new age pricing forced on them, and the older stuff. ( I would expect things like CSM to go up as more new items are added and old units are redone and upped into the new price regime.

Could it be that its a lack of deluxe kits akin to the Wraithknight that makes Chaos Space Marines cheaper?

I would no doubt hazard at a rough guess you have what at least $15000 - $20000 worth of 40k?

Adds up over the years 😊

Yeah the CSM is one of my oldest collections and so doesn't have any of the new generation stuff >> eg Thousand sons or Magnus. It does however contain the Helldrake/Forgefiend/ plastic dreads era items.

I might do a breakdown over the army selection slots. Cos just quickly I seem to remember thinking the troop boxes and things like Aspect warriors coming out cheaper than I would have thought. The squad boxes were seemingly priced more reasonably per point than the later big MC's/vehicles/ superheavy/ GMC.

It looks like they really made push to price up the big fancy eye-catching things. eg things like my Tau where I know I have indulged in the bigger single units and some ForgeWorld + now $$ heavy stuff like Crisis that have been re-priced from $25 each (and when I got them secondhand for maybe $8 lol)....to now 3/$125....really seem to have pushed up the average. I also priced my 66 Drones at the new crazy GW price of 2 for $20.... (they used to be free in squad boxes). That's $660 worth of drones that I have basically collected for very little $$, back when people were giving them away. wink.gif

Just remember that for insurance, you need to value it based on for new replacement. So if you have the old school thousand sons, they need to be valued as the new kits.

Sadly, I'd need to take up a second job to pay for the insurance alone.

Having a similar sized collection, I can sympathise.

How much do they charge you for these sorts of absurd policies anyway?

Generally varies from company to company and what they classify the collectibles as. I've had quotes from 5-10k (per year) in the past.

Holy hell. What sort of risks are we even thinking about with collections? I'm guessing with that sort of gear you would guard against flood so are we just thinking housefire and theft (which seems pretty fantastical)

Oddly, the insurer I use didn't care about the collection factor. I guess it would be an issue if you were insuring the paint job too as opposed to just replacing the models.

Insurers generally treat a collection as a separately insured item. So charge you a premium to insure it. When I raised my collection with them when taking out the policy, they just said to treat it as general contents but to make sure tis value was part of the contents value. So if it was all lost in a fire or something, I'd be able to get replacements, but not get it painted by a commission painter. The commission painting that Morachi has had done would likely change the minis into an actual collectors piece (since they are one of a kind as a result of the paint work), so would need to be insured as individual pieces.

Bingo... and what a pain in the rear end it is as a process, let alone the ongoing yearly financial cost.

Add to that privately commissioned sculpts (and subsequent diorama settings), there are alot of additional aspects to consider in the financial calculations - As an example, almost 1k to have the Warp Spider Phoenix Lord commissioned (sculpt, cast, paint, diorama, shipping etc etc etc...).
